Naarm-based group Folk B*tch Trio—Gracie Sinclair, Jeanie Pilkington, and Heide Peverelle—have announced their debut album, Now Would Be A Good Time, arriving July 25 via Jagjaguwar, alongside the release of their introspective new single “Cathode Ray.”
“Cathode Ray” is stark and haunting, with spacious instrumentation and a chorus that rings out like a cry for release.
“It expresses a feeling of being trapped in myself, and wanting to break out of that so violently that I’m literally talking about opening up a body viscerally,” says Sinclair. “It’s about frustration, and knowing there’s no cheap thrill that’s going to fix that.”
The new single follows “The Actor,” praised by Beats Per Minute and Rolling Stone, and builds anticipation for the album, which was recorded in Auckland with Tom Healy.
The trio brings diverse artistic influences to their collaboration. Pilkington’s roots music background, Peverelle’s artistic sensibility, and Sinclair’s dramatic, gothic leanings shape their genre-blending sound. Their chemistry, forged in high school and honed over five years, is unmistakable.
Their debut captures the feeling of being in your early 20s—navigating desire, disillusionment, and modern overstimulation with clarity and bite.
Following extensive touring across Europe, the U.S., and Australia, and support slots for names like King Gizzard, Julia Jacklin, and Alex G, the band will return home for a headline tour across Australia and New Zealand this September.
