Elliot James Reay, the Manchester-born singer-songwriter with a global viral following, unveils his latest single “Who Knew Dancing Was A Sin,” a nostalgic yet fresh celebration of rhythm, romance, and retro soul, released via Interscope / Island EMI.
Written with SOAP (Josh Noble and Karl Ziegler), Annielle Lisiuk, and Glen Roberts, the track tells the tale of a misunderstood night out—a partner suspects infidelity, when in truth, Reay was just dancing. It’s humorous and heartfelt, wrapped in a ’60s-style groove complete with horns, strings, and handclaps.
“It’s a shame she doesn’t get it… You can try to stop the music, but you can’t stop my feet,” sings Reay.
The accompanying music video is a love letter to the Northern Soul scene still alive in Manchester. It features Reay in a sharply suited flashback sequence, dancing through smoky club settings and shimmering vinyl sounds.
“Who Knew Dancing Was A Sin” follows the path paved by Reay’s runaway hit “I Think They Call This Love,” which earned 121 million+ streams, 1 billion TikTok views, and millions of loyal fans. His catalog so far includes “Daydreaming” and “Boy in Love,” both of which continue his blend of classic and contemporary.
At just 23, Reay is shaping up to be a generational artist—grounded in heritage, but building something very much his own.
