Australian trio Skegss introduce a new sonic direction with their latest track “State of Hawaii,” the second single from their upcoming EP Top Heavy, arriving June 27 on Loma Vista Recordings. A gentle and experimental departure, the song draws on bossa nova rhythms, layered vocals, and trumpet melodies to evoke both island beauty and escapism.
Following their energetic track “So Excited,” this latest single leans into a dreamy, island-inspired sound. The accompanying video, shot during tour and directed by Kale Neville, adds a road-worn authenticity to the track’s breezy feel.
Lead singer Benny Reed explains the process:
“We had a bit of fun with this song in the studio where we tried a few different versions and then thought it would be fun to go a little Latin or Cuban… We got some congas in there and trumpet for the first time, as well as some Spanish vocals.”
With a 20+ date U.S. tour recently wrapped and a successful European leg nearing its end—including sold-out stops in Paris, Glasgow, and London—Skegss are keeping momentum high. Their largest Australian tour ever begins next month, including a feature in the 2025 VIVID program.
Their last release, Pacific Highway Music, cemented Skegss’ reputation for introspective-yet-energetic rock. Now, with Top Heavy, the band is adding new textures to their sound while staying true to their carefree ethos.
