Nigerian-born UK artist Obongjayar shares the bold and confrontational “Jellyfish,” the newest single from his sophomore album PARADISE NOW, arriving May 30 via September Recordings. Teaming up with Carlos O’Connell and Kwes Darko, “Jellyfish” finds him channeling rage and clarity into a gritty sonic blend of synth-punk, drum and bass, and Afrobeat undertones.
In a recent feature with The Observer, Obongjayar described the track as a diss aimed at political and corporate figures.
“Seeing how governments move, people in power, corporations – [for] whatever monetary reasons you sell yourself.”
Tara Joshi aptly called the single “a scathing song about spineless British politicians.”
“Jellyfish” joins “Sweet Danger,” “Not in Surrender,” and “Just My Luck” as the latest insights into the thematic richness of PARADISE NOW. Produced between London and LA, the album brings together talents like Yeti Beats, Kwes Darko, and Beach Noise, exploring emotional terrain ranging from loneliness and FOMO to self-acceptance and grief.
The only feature on the album comes from Little Simz, who recently collaborated with Obongjayar on her track “Flood.”
Starting July 24, Obongjayar will perform three U.S. shows, including a stop at Newport Folk Festival, marking his first headline run in the States. He’ll tour across the UK and EU this November, culminating in a milestone performance at O2 Kentish Town Forum in London.
