Mina Okabe Explores the Pain of Change in New Single “Always Hurts”

Mina Okabe shares “Always Hurts,” a poignant and beautifully composed track about love, loss, and holding onto meaningful relationships.
Mina Okabe returns with her latest single, “Always Hurts”, a deeply emotional reflection on the struggle between holding on and letting go. Released via Capitol Records, the song is the fourth preview of her highly anticipated sophomore album, set for release this spring.
Produced by Leroy Clampitt (Dua Lipa, Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber), the song opens with gentle acoustic guitar and hushed vocals, capturing the delicate nature of Okabe’s songwriting. As the track progresses, it builds with layered harmonies, soft piano melodies, and dreamlike textures, culminating in an arrangement that feels both personal and universal.
Discussing the song’s meaning, Okabe shares:
“I grew up with a Danish dad and a Japanese mom and in different cities. I’ve lived in London, New York, and Manila but now live in Copenhagen. Although I’m very grateful for the experiences it has brought me, and I somewhat got used to leaving places and people behind, there are some people in my life I never want to leave and never would be able to say goodbye to. This song is for and about them.” – Mina Okabe
Since the release of her 2021 debut album Better Days, which is certified four-times platinum in Korea, Okabe has continued to make an impact worldwide. Her song “Every Second” has amassed over 58 million streams on Spotify, leading to her recognition as a Spotify RADAR Artist and an Apple Music One To Watch.
Fresh from a sold-out Japan tour and a nomination for the 2025 Music Moves Europe Awards, Okabe recently took the stage at Eurosonic Festival in the Netherlands. With over 500 million streams and performances at SXSW, Roskilde Festival, Seoul Jazz Festival, and Summer Sonic, Okabe’s star continues to rise as she prepares for the release of her sophomore album.
